Nicki Minaj is set to join Mariah Carey as a judge on the upcoming season of American Idol.

The exit of former judges Jennifer Lopez and Aerosmith singer Steven Tyler after just two seasons left fans wondering which celebrities would be gracing the panel next season.

Sources told UsWeekly that Minaj has “a few more slight things to sign off on,” but she is “100 percent confirmed to judge.”

Jonas Brother Nick Jonas is also in the running to become an American Idol judge. He tweeted last month that “It would be a dream come true if it happens.”

Although American Idol remained the most popular non-football program in the 2011-2012 TV seasons, rating still fell from previous seasons. The season finale netted the smallest audience for the program ever.

The addition of Minaj, with her outlandish costumes and ‘Harajuku Barbie’ alter ego, to the mix should help to pull in a much needed younger audience. Last season, viewership among teens and twenty-somethings plunged 30%.

Minaj revealed in a recent interview with MTV that she has a new musical project in the works that will be released later this year. She is also due to make an appearance on Lil Wayne’s upcoming Dedication 4 mixtape.
