Roald Dahl’s inventive and extraordinary tales have for decades captured the imaginations of children globally. Now Dahl’s fantastical story of ‘The BFG’ will be reintroduced to children and adults alike as DreamWorks have acquired the rights to a big screen adaptation.
Published in 1982, ‘The BFG’ tells the tale of a Big Friendly Giant who collects good dreams and distributes them to sleeping children. A young girl named Sophie befriends the giant and together they visit the Queen of England in the hopes of persuading her to capture bad giants and punish them for the unforgivable crime of eating “human beans”.
DreamWorks will collaborate with ‘ET’ writer Melissa Mathison, who like Mr. Dahl, shares a sublime talent for perfectly capturing fantastical and imaginative stories. Frank Marshall (‘Indiana Jones’) is set to produce the live action movie, however as of yet no director has been assigned the project.
This is the second time ‘The BFG’ has been adapted for a visual audience. In 1989 David Jason (‘Only Fools and Horses’) voiced the Giant in a Christmas Day TV animation.
Dahl’s tales are no stranger to the big screen. Memorable adaptations have included, ‘James and the Giant Peach,’ ‘Matilda,’ ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’ and more recently ‘The Fantastic Mr. Fox’ which received two Oscar nominations.
