Dreamworks Pictures have revealed the first promotional poster for Steven Spielberg‘s latest epic, ‘War Horse.’

The film, which is an adaptation of a novel by Michael Morpurgo, will star Benedict Cumberbatch (‘Sherlock’), Tom Hiddleston (‘Thor’), Emily Watson (‘Breaking the Waves’), Patrick Kennedy (‘Atonement’), Eddie Marsan (‘Hancock’), and Peter Mullan, alongside theater actor Jeremy Irvine, who will make his Hollywood debut with ‘War Horse’.

The film follows the story of the unbreakable bond between a horse named Joey and his young trainer Albert (Jeremy Irvine). At World War I breaks out, Joey is sold to the armed forces to service the trenches. Despite being too young to enlist in the army, Albert heads to the western front to save his equine friend.

The tagline of the movie, “Separated by war. Tested by battle. Bound by friendship,” offers further insight into the film, which adapts what is widely regarded to be one of the greatest stories of friendship and war.

The film has previously been adapted for theater, with notable critics remarking that there ‘was not a dry eye left’ at the end of the play.

Spielberg was said to be frustrated at the lack of expressiveness real horses have, while making the film. The tony award winning theater adaptations of ‘War Horse’ that appeared on Broadway always used animatronic puppets that were artificially expressive.

‘War Horse’ will make its US premiere on December 28,2011, closely followed by its UK release on January 13, 2012.
