Following the rousing success of this month’s reboot of The Amazing Spider-Man, 20th Century Fox are also looking for a franchise makeover with the Fantastic Four series.

Each of the series’ previous installments, Fantastic Four (2005) and Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer (2007), were both modestly successful, in total grossing over $600 million world-wide at the box office. However, the series was maligned by critics and fans alike,  receiving universally poor reviews.

This isn’t stopping Fox, who recently announced at last weekend’s Comic-Con convention in San Diego, California that Chronicle director Josh Trank is set to direct the newest installment in the series. Alongside Trank will be emerging writer Jeremy Slater, whose previous credits include Tape 4, a horror script centering around the life of H.P. Lovecraft that has been recently picked up by Lionsgate. Slater has also been receiving plenty of positive buzz around his other spec script The Man of Tomorrow, which focuses on the figures of Superman and Batman in an alternative universe in the 1940’s.

No word has been announced of an expected release time.

The Fantastic Four tells the story of Mister Fantastic (Reed Richards), the Invisible Woman (Susan Storm), the Human Torch (Johnny Storm), and the Thing (Ben Grimm), who gained superpowers after being exposed to cosmic rays.
