Disney’s summer blockbuster ‘The Avengers Assemble’ has received criticism from fans concerning the Blu-ray discs lack of bonus material.

British fans were left disappointed when it was confirmed that director Joss Whedon‘s commentary would be cut from the UK edition.

Fans expressed further outrage after finding the DVD release had been censored after a scene in which Agent Coulson is stabbed with a spear, was digitally altered.

However Disney have insisted there was ‘No foul play’ in the release of the UK edition and have stated that there are no current plans for a special edition boxset release as fans should not feel compelled to buy two versions. Instead it has been suggested die-hard fans purchase the region free US edition, which will include the anticipated extras.

Speaking to HomeCinemaChoice, Lydia Rodrigues, the UK spokesperson for Disney Home Entertainment sympathised with fans stating that the exclusion of the director’s commentary was beyond their control. She explained, “Our DLT (Digital Linear Tape) had to be delivered one month earlier than that required for the US pressing. So we missed out. We wanted it too.”

Regarding fans claims of censorship, Rodrigues stated, “The version on the disc is the same as was released in the UK theatrically. The simple fact is for a 12 certificate in the UK, that scene was deemed inappropriate. So Marvel Studios chose to remove the spear tip digitally.”

At the very least, British fans will still get to see the gag reel for ‘The Avengers’ – Watch a clip of it below:
