Sony Pictures Animation has retained the rights to ALF for a major motion picture.

For those with a foggier memory, ALF was a cult-hit show in the late 80s about a comedic alien crashing into a family’s garage in the San Fernando Valley. The show was created by Paul Fusco, who also voiced ALF. He is also penned, alongside producer Tom Patchett, the new film.

The expected theatrical version will be a combination of CGI and live-action, similar to 2011’s The Smurfs, which was produced by Jordan Kerner – who is also expected to produce the new ALF project.

Fusco has been at work pitching the idea of the film to production companies for the past several months, noting, “There have been movies out there of characters that I didn’t think were on the same parallel as ALF that got movies made, so I think it’s time. I think it could be a home run on a lot of levels.”
