Filming has begun on Toni Collette’s new television series “Wanderlust”. The series is produced by London-based independent production company Drama Republic, known for dramas like “The Honourable Woman” with Maggie Gyllenhaal and “Doctor Foster” with Suranne Jones.
A drama series in six parts, “Wanderlust” tells the story of Joy Richards, a therapist who must come to terms with her marriage after her husband is injured in a bicycle accident. “Wanderlust” will cover several generations of the Richards family and examine monogamy and adultery.
English dramatist Nick Payne has made the jump to the small screen for the new series. “Wanderlust” is his first television script. The series is directed by Luke Snellin, best known for directing several television episodes of series like “Mad Fat Diary”, also produced by Drama Republic, and “Fried”. “Wanderlust” additionally features William Ash, who portrayed science teacher Christopher Mean on “Waterloo Road”. The cast is rounded out with “Fresh Meat” star Zawe Ashton, Steven Mackintosh and Royce Pierreson. The series will premiere on BBC One in the United Kingdom and on Netflix in the United States and other countries.
Collette’s earlier Showtime series “The United States of Tara” was a popular title for the streaming platform. It earned her a Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Television Series Musical or Comedy. Collette first rose to fame in 1994 with the surprise hit “Muriel’s Wedding”. Since then, she has appeared in mainstream successes like “The Sixth Sense” and “In Her Shoes”. However, the actress has become most known for roles in independent films such as the breakout hit “Little Miss Sunshine”. Netflix hopes to take advantage of Collette’s name recognition among international audiences to promote its new series.
“Wanderlust” is currently being shot on location in Manchester. Netflix has not announced when they expect to release the series on their streaming platform.
