Actor Dwayne Johnson has confirmed that Adam Sztykiel has been hired to write the script for the DC Extended Universe’s Black Adam movie, in which Johnson will play the titular character.

Johnson adds that he’s “Excited to expand the DC Universe w/ writer Adam Sztykiel (co-wrote @rampagethemovie) and bring this complex & gritty anti-hero to the big screen. This character’s in my bones. Ruthless code.”

The Rampage film that Sztykiel co-wrote is set for release in 2018 and will also star Dwayne Johnson. It is an adaptation of the video game of the same name, which focuses on humans who were transformed into giant monsters and who subsequently attack cities. With those credentials, comic book fans may be encouraged by his ability to write a morally gray action film.

The Black Adam film was announced as a prequel to the upcoming Shazam, where Johnson’s Black Adam would have been the villain. Over the summer, however, it was revealed that Shazam would have a different antagonist, leading Black Adam‘s status in question; news of Sztykiel’s involvement seems to confirm that it will be moving forward, however.

In the comic books, the Shazam franchise focuses on Billy Batson, a young boy who can transform into an adult superhero when he says “Shazam,” the name of the wizard who gave him these powers. Black Adam is the name of one of his arch-enemies, who was the Wizard Shazam’s first champion back during the days of ancient Egypt; Black Adam turned evil, however, and was banished, only to reappear in the present day.

Over the years, Black Adam evolved into more of an antihero, however, which is how the DC Extended Universe plans to portray him. Johnson says that he is a major fan of the character, and has been set to play him for several years.

It is unclear when the Black Adam movie is going to come out, though it is apparently now planned to be released after Shazam, which is scheduled for April 5, 2019 and will be directed by David F. Sandberg.

Shazam recently announced its casting of Asher Angel in the role of Billy and Zachary Levi for Billy’s superhero form. Mark Strong is reportedly in talks to play the villain, a mad scientist named Doctor Sivana.
