MTV announced the nominees for the 2012 MTV Video Music Awards this morning. Rihanna and Drake are the front-runners at this year’s awards ceremony with five nominations each.

Drake’s “Take Care” featuring Rihanna is up for the coveted Video of the Year Award, doubling Rihanna’s chances in that category. She is nominated for “We Found Love” in the same category.

Exes Rihanna and Chris Brown will be competing against each other for the Best Choreography and Best Male Video (Rihanna is featured in Drake’s “Take Care”) awards.

Katy Perry is close behind Rihanna and Drake, with three nods including Video of the Year and Best Art Direction. Lady Gaga, who took home two VMA awards last year for her “Born This Way” video, was not nominated at all this year.

This year’s VMAs will include a new category, Best Electronic Dance Music Video in which Skrillex, Calvin Harris and Avicii compete for top honors.

The winners will be revealed on September 6 when the 2012 MTV Video Music Awards airs live from Los Angeles. The show will feature performances from Alicia Keys and Best New Artist nominee One Direction.
