The shortlist for this year’s Barclaycard Mercury Prize was announced yesterday in front of an audience at The Hospital Club in London, England.

The nominees are:

  • Adele – 21
  • Anna Calvi – Anna Calvi
  • Elbow – Build A Rocket Boys!
  • Everything Everything – Man Alive
  • Ghostpoet – Peanut Butter Blues and Melancholy Jam
  • Gwilym Simcock – Good Days At Schloss Elmau
  • James Blake – James Blake
  • Katy B – On A Mission
  • King Creosote & Jon Hopkins – Diamond Mine
  • Metronomy – The English Riviera
  • PJ Harvey – Let England Shake
  • Tinie Tempah – Disc-Overy

While Adele has had a stellar year with her album, ’21,’ breaking records left and right she has some tough competition; especially with PJ Harvey who won the coveted award in 2001 for her album, ‘Stories from the City, Stories from the Sea.’

Artist James Blake also recently created a mixtape with rapper, Drake, titled ‘James Drake’ that has been well received by American audiences. But it’s all about the quality of the music at the Mercury’s, not who you’ve collaborated with or how many albums you have sold, so it’s still anyone’s guess who will walk away with this year’s Mercury Album of the Year award.

The winner will be announced September 6, 2011.
