Fans of DC Comics and nerd culture are eagerly awaiting next summer’s The Batman, the next silver screen adaptation of the adventures of the Caped Crusader. While the film’s release is over a year away, the internet is already talking about the project owing to the start of filming earlier this month. Compared to other films centering around the Dark Knight, The Batman boasts a star-studded cast with Twilight’s Robert Pattinson playing Bruce Wayne/Batman and Zoe Kravitz, Andy Serkis, Jeffrey Wright, Paul Dano, and Colin Ferrell in supporting roles. In a new interview on Jimmy Kimmel Live, Ferrell talked about the film’s high-quality script.

Ferrell spoke with Kimmel while promoting his latest project, The Gentleman. When asked about what drew him to The Batman, Ferrell said that it was undoubtedly the script, which was written by Matt Reeves. Ferrell says that Reeves, who is also directing the project, wrote a script that the actor described as “beautiful, dark, moving” and “really gorgeous.” Ferrell, who will be playing the crime lord the Penguin in the film, says that he is currently working with Reeves to iron out the aesthetics of his character. Ferrell also joked about how secretive the project is, saying that the only way he could read the script was by having it chained to his arm.

Nonetheless, Ferrell did hint that his iteration of the Penguin will be different from the comic book version. As fans of DC know, the Penguin is often depicted as short and fat. While Ferrell’s version will not have this appearance, the actor humorously intones that as he starts filming in three weeks, he still has time to work on gaining weight and shrinking his height for the production. When talking about the role in a separate interview on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Ferrell said that is children are tired of him playing villains in his films. The father of two says that he infers that he must be a good person from how much his kids object to him playing bad guys.

Reeves says that fans can expect The Batman to be a point of view-driven film showcasing the Caped Crusader’s detective skills. The director reveals that the film’s plot will involve Batman tracking down criminals in a story that gradually unfolds and proves once and for all why the Dark Knight is the world’s greatest detective.

The Batman hits theaters on June 25, 2021.
