The ‘Yellowstone’ spinoff ‘1883’ was well-received as the initial prequel to the saga around the Dutton family. ‘1883’ starred Sam Elliot, Tim McGraw, and Faith Hill and told the story of how the family came to own the land in Montana. As a limited series, ‘1883’ was only intended to run for a set amount of episodes, but the prequel was so popular that ‘Yellowstone’ creator Taylor Sheridan decided to write yet another prequel to the popular show.

This time, the prequel stars Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren and is titled ‘1923.’

The trailer for ‘1923’ premiered Sunday evening during the broadcast of Season Five of ‘Yellowstone.’

The second prequel to Sheridan’s hit show is set in the early years of the twentieth century, and the show will follow characters through a historic drought, Prohibition, the stock market crash, the Spanish flu pandemic and the Great Depression. The Dutton family is as strong as ever, with Harrison Ford’s character promising any enemy that if one hurts a member of the Dutton family, it’s the last thing that person will do.

Kevin Costner, who stars as John Dutton in the ‘Yellowstone’ series, will also play a role in the ‘1923’ prequel. In it, Costner appears in the role of John Dutton III. The original John Dutton was the young son of the characters played by Tim McGraw and Faith Hill.

While the Duttons in ‘1923’ are descendants of the family portrayed in ‘1883,’ at least one character is a from a family recently arriving in America. Mirren’s character, Cara Dutton, is an Irish American. Mirren recently told Vanity Fair that she prepared for the role by practicing to utilize an Irish accent. Mirren mentioned that she wanted her character to appear as truly authentic, even though many Westerns over the years have featured American characters with an American accent.

The trailer for ‘1923’ premiered on Paramount+. However, ‘Yellowstone’ is broadcast weekly on the Paramount Network.
