Fans of Games of Thrones and House of Dragons will be excited to know that George R.R. Martin is making a lot of progress on his next series of novels The Winds of Winter.

In an interview on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Martin says although the next series of novels have yet to be completed, he has made significant progress. “I’m in the progress of interweaving some of the characters and story lines. It will take while, but I’m close to getting it done.”

Martin is known to take his time with his writing. But he always seem to have everything in order when needed. In 2011, Dance With Dragons was completed just in time for the Game of Thrones season 1 ending.

But again, there was the onset of COVID-19, which affected his writing — pretty much like most others in Hollywood. Martin blogged that the isolation put a damper on his efforts. Since the danger has subsided a bit, he says he is back at it.

Colbert ribbed Martin about how he has a tendency to do things big, and what readers and viewers should see in the illustrated The Rise of the Dragon. Martin noted that he has a deeper budget this time around, and he made sure the additional funds would go towards the creation of the dragons. He says he was determined to give all the dragons a different look, size, and personality.

Although Martin says he grew up on great science fiction and fantasy, he is a bit pessimistic about what is going on in the world and how it parallels with science fiction/fantasy.

Near the end of the interview, Martin joked about how he wishes he had a dragon to fly to the Kremlin.
