The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have announced they are expecting their first child.

Officials at St James’s Palace confirmed the news after weeks of royal pregnancy rumors.

The Queen, The Duke of Edinburgh, The Prince of Wales, The Duchess of Cornwall, Prince Harry and members of both families” are said to be delighted to learn the royal couple will be having a child.

Their child is the first grandchild for both the royal and Middleton families, and will be third in line to the throne after Prince William and Prince Charles, with the possibility of direct succession to the crown.

News of the pregnancy comes on the same day Duchess Middleton was admitted to King Edward VII Hospital in London early this morning following severe bouts of morning sickness. With the pregnancy in its very early stages, the palace has confirmed that Kate will stay in hospital for several days to ensure everything is OK.

UK Prime Minister David Cameron released a statement shortly after the palace broke the news, saying: “I’m delighted by the news that the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are expecting a baby… They will make wonderful parents.”

While there has been no official confirmation, rumors suggest Duchess Middleton is 12-weeks pregnant. If this holds true, the couple’s child should be due in June 2013.

Our congratulations to the happy couple.

Prince William and Kate Middleton wed at Westminster Abbey on April 29, 2011.
