The 2018 Golden Globes were packed with memorable moments, but it’s Oprah Winfrey’s electrifying acceptance speech that’s causing the most buzz in not only Hollywood, but Washington. Winfrey’s strong support of the Me Too movement had watchers glued to their screens, moved by her passionate statements regarding the tidal wave of powerful men who were exposed as sexual predators during the past year. Then, viewers seemed to pick up on a political undertone in Winfrey’s speech; a hint that she could become the nation’s next president.

Besides remarking that “…a new day is on the horizon” for women, Oprah’s entire speech flowed with a campaign-esque vibe. Her acceptance of the Cecil B. DeMille Award included references to the enduring challenges of racism, the importance of standing against tyranny and corruption, the long-lasting effects of sexism and a reflection on her own experiences working with people of diverse backgrounds throughout her career.

Though the queen of daytime TV laughed off the idea of candidacy when asked about it last fall, fans are nevertheless hoping she’ll consider starting up a campaign. Oprah has long been considered one of the country’s most beloved celebrities, and with a former reality television star already in the White House, her lack of political experience may not be a significant barrier. The Democratic Party has so far not presented any serious options for the 2020 candidacy.

Winfrey’s fans aren’t the only ones with their mind on a run for office, though. Longtime partner Stedman Graham opened up to the Los Angeles Times, saying that Oprah would happily represent the American people. Current president Donald Trump stated on The Larry King Show that he’d like to have Winfrey on his own ticket, saying she’d be a “popular” and “brilliant” pick for vice president. Even first daughter Ivanka Trump had supportive words for Winfrey, taking to Twitter to say her speech was “inspiring” and posting a hashtag associated with the Me Too movement.

Though the respected media proprietor has plenty of fans in all areas of life, it may not be enough to push her into a political career. Winfrey’s only comments to date on the matter are adamant denials of any urges to run for office. Only time will tell if the “new horizon” in America includes a President Winfrey in 2020.
