Fans of Justin Bieber may recall his T-shirt line, particularly a $195 T-shirt with Marilyn Manson’s face plastered across the front of it. Well, the metal singer’s likeness was used without consent, but, instead of going to court, Manson went directly to the culprit for his own brand of justice. In a recent discussion, Marilyn Manson recounts how he got even with Bieber.
Marilyn Manson Sends A Message About Using His Likeness
The incident involving the T-shirts resulted in a long-running feud between Marilyn Manson and Justin Bieber, but Manson is now sharing how he avenged himself. While Marilyn says he appreciates his fans, even those who are celebrities themselves, he said he does take issue with the fact that Bieber used his face to promote his own music.
While performing his Purpose World Tour, Justin wore a sleeveless shirt with Manson’s image on the front, but the back of the shirt was emblazoned with Bieber’s name. Certainly, the trick was meant to draw the attention of Marilyn’s fanbase and it did just that, but not in the way Justin may have intended.
Ultimately, word got back to Manson and thus started the feud. It seemed the cold war between Justin and Marilyn might forever go unanswered, but a chance encounter gave Marilyn Manson an opportunity to confront the pop singer.
Marilyn Manson And Justin Bieber Ended Up At The Same Bar
Marilyn recalls walking into a bar and catching sight of Justin Bieber, though he says he at first thought Justin was a little girl. He describes the pop star as a “little girl in a pink hoodie with blond hair,” but soon recognized the person to be Bieber, himself. Not one to let the opportunity pass, Marilyn confronted his rival about the T-shirt.
Bieber’s response only infuriated Marilyn Manson that much more, First, by touching Manson as he spoke and getting too far into his personal space. Second, he told Manson that the incident made the metal singer “relevant” all over again.
Manson decided to set Justin up for a big fall. He told Bieber that they could do “The Beautiful People” together on stage at the pop singer’s Staples Center Concert. Once Marilyn convinced Justin that the duet would happen and he could see him getting pumped up about the idea, he left, leaving Bieber thinking the live collaboration would happen the next night.
“His tour manager sat down, and I asked, ‘What time is sound check tomorrow? What time should I be there? Because we’re going to do ‘Beautiful People.’’ Obviously, when 4 p.m. rolled around the next day, I just didn’t show.”
The T-shirt company responsible for the Manson/Bieber shirt discontinued the product. According to Marilyn Manson, he was offered a settlement, before a lawsuit was ever filed.
