Modern Family actress Ariel Winter has been put through the ringer by critics more than once for her fashion sense, particularly because many of her outfits are designed to be as revealing as possible. While Winter never lets critics or internet trolls tell her how to dress, she does take them to task from time to time. This is one of those times.
Ariel Winter Celebrates Her Body, No Matter Who It Offends
There was time when Ariel Winter limited what she posted on her social media accounts, because she was concerned about the reaction of her fans. That time is past. Now, Ariel has decided her fans -and her critics- are just going to have to accept her for who she is and that includes accepting her provocative fashion sense.
The Modern Family actress says censoring her style out of a fear of internet trolls goes against her grain. She embraces body positivity and thinks everyone should be proud of their bodies, adding no one should be shamed for their fashion sense or their body type.
Winter says she has personally been “slut shamed” for wearing revealing clothing, but she doesn’t feel one’s style of dress necessarily relates to one’s personality.
“People call me stupid because I post photos of my butt when the real thing is, I love my butt. I love butts! Why stifle yourself because other people can’t handle it?”
Ariel Winter Went Through Puberty On Screen
As a lead on Modern Family, Ariel was the center of attention on the family comedy-drama, even when that was the last thing she wanted. She now reveals feeling humiliated by the changes her body went through, because she started the show before puberty.
In season one, Winter recalls that she had no figure at all, because her breasts and hips had yet to develop, but, by the second installment of Modern Family, Ariel had blossomed. Her breasts filled out, even more than she had anticipated, and her hips widened, giving her a plump behind as well.
Even then, Ariel recalls that the online community was harsh in its judgments of her, especially when one realizes that the Modern Family star was just 11 and 12 years old at the time.
“It was automatically ‘You’re a fat slut.’ ‘You’re a whore,’” recalled Winter.
Ariel says she took that hate as a sign that she was doing something wrong, so she tried to appease her critics. No matter what she tried, the hate grew worse and made her feel even more miserable. In the end, Ariel Winter realized people were always going to criticize her, so she went back to being herself.
