Lady Gaga took to Twitter to respond to Staten Island politician James Molinaro‘s verbal attack on her last week.

Molinaro criticized the 26-year-old pop star for smoking pot onstage at a concert in Amsterdam recently.

“We have to understand that there’s a tremendous influence with our youth, which I didn’t have as a youth,” he reportedly said during an anti-substance abuse event. “And there’s the influence right there. Stop glorifying the drug use.”

He added: “There’s Gaga. Here’s this… this… I would call her a slut. This slut is influencing many, many children.”

Another politician, Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer spoke out in Lady Gaga’s defense to the New York Observer. In a statement issued Tuesday, Stringer called her a “a social justice activist and a real leader for marriage equality in this country.”

Lady Gaga tweeted a shout-out to Stringer on Thursday in thanks for his support:.

The singer has been the target of a lot of criticism recently. A number of media outlets recently took issue with Gaga’s recent weight gain, prompting her to declare “A Body Revolution 2013.” The new movement is meant to encourage body acceptance.
