Selena Gomez is heading back to Waverly Place, reprising the role of Alex Russo in the Emmy Award winning series, ‘Wizards of Waverly Place.’

The actress/ singer will also be trying something new, stepping into the role of executive producer for the movie, which is set in Italy.

There will be a lot of familiar faces from the series, which ended just last year. While Selena’s on-screen brother Justin, played by David Henrie, will not appear in the film, Jake T. Austin, Jennifer Stone, Maria Canals-Barrera, David DeLuise and Gregg Sulkin are all coming back for the TV movie.

“With the phenomenal ratings of the Wizards finale earlier this year, it became clear that fans of the series were not ready to say goodbye to Selena or the rest of the ‘Wizards’ cast,” said Gary Marsh, president and chief creative officer of Disney Channels Worldwide. “As such, we’re thrilled that the cast has agreed to reunite to bring their fans one last grand adventure.”

The movie features a botched spell that creates a “good” Alex and a “bad” Alex. The fight between the two culminates with a battle between the two versions of herself on the Leaning Tower of Pisa.

Gomez is known for her roles in family-friendly fare like animated flick ‘Hotel Transyvania’ and ‘Ramona and Beezus,’ but she has recently been branching out.

Not only is she adding an executive producer notch on her belt, she is also taking on darker film roles. She stars as Faith, in ‘Springbreakers,’ an R-rated movie co-starring James Franco.

‘The Wizards of Waverly Place’ ended on Jan. 6, 2012 after a four-year run on the Disney Channel. The ‘Wizards of Waverly Place’ movie will begin filming in October and will premiere in early 2013.
