The rumors linking critically acclaimed director David Fincher to Sony for a biopic piece on Cleopatra have been put to a halt.

Fincher’s negotiations with Sony Pictures on the deal have come to a complete stop, with the company now looking for ‘Life of Pi’ director Ang Lee to take on the role of director, reports Vulture.

The project has been in the works for several years; however, FirstShowing notes it has suffered numerous delays. Fincher himself delayed the Cleopatra project when production began for 2011’s ‘The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo,’ which he directed.

While Fincher’s reasons for dropping out of the project remain unknown, it may be related to the ‘Dragon Tattoo’ sequel, ‘The Girl Who Played With Fire.’ While he is still in talks to nab the film’s direction duties, Fincher is thought to be a favorite to return to the series as director.

Angelina Jolie has signed on for the lead role in ‘Cleopatra.’ ‘Forrest Gump’ screenplay writer Eric Roth was due to don the film’s writing duties;; however, with the change in direction it remains to be seen if Roth will remain with the project.

The Cleopatra movie was originally due for release late 2013. It remains to be seen how this shake-up affects that release date.
