The Lorde has returned.

Indications of her impending return have been coming all week in the form of mysterious maps, five seconds of drinking in the back of a car, and a green beach in her hometown of Auckland, NZ. Now, we finally know what these signs mean.

The pop songstress took to Instagram recently to announce her upcoming album Melodrama, which will serve as her second album, following her critically acclaimed debut with Pure Heroine in 2013.

While we wait for Melodrama, which is due in June 2017, Lorde was kind enough to bless us with ‘Green Light,’ which serves as the first single to be released from the upcoming album.

Produced by Lorde herself. with some assistance from Fun.‘s Jack Antonoff, it opens with the same deep, brooding lyrics you would expect to find on her last album. It’s clear she hasn’t lost her penchant for meaningful lyrics, but there’s something new and experimental with the rest of the sound. While she’s been featured on a few tracks in the interim, the sound is fresh and more than fitting for a release that ends her four-year hiatus as a lead artist.

‘Green Light’ is also varied, changing in the same way a person changes after a meaningful relationship draws to a close and moving away from brooding (“She thinks you love the beach, you’re such a damn liar”) to something more positive (“I’m waiting for it, that green light, euphoric!”). There’s certainly something new here, and we can’t wait to hear the rest.
