When it comes to injustices, Halsey is not one to stay silent. In a recent TikTok, the Without Me singer exposed how her record label hinders the success of its artists.

Recently, Halsey released a TikTok about wanted to release a new song. “my record label won’t let me and my record company is saying that I can’t release it unless they fake a viral moment on TikTok,” read the in-video text while the song played in the background.

“Record companies are relying on likes and algorithms to plan release schedules and are cutting down music release cycles for albums as they please. It is completely harming artists’ autonomy over their music and they are right to speak up about it.” a fan posted on Tumblr in support. Many fans have commented all over social media, urging Halsey to release the song anyways.

Yet, many others failed to see how making TikToks was a problem. So Halsey took to Twitter to further explain that the situation is not all about making TikToks.

“They are saying if they don’t reach some imaginary goalpost of views or vitality [then] they won’t give me a release date at all.” Halsey clarified in a Tweet. “I’m not claiming to be oppressed! Just saying that not all marketing methods are universal.” The singer has multiple Top 10 hits under her belt and has sold over 1 millions albums, and yet struggles to release more music.

Other artists came to Halsey’s defense. Singers such as Charli XCX and Florence Welch also posted TikToks, verifying Halsey’s word.

It seems Halsey’s malicious compliance worked. Currently, the TikTok has over 8 million views, and has everyone from Billboard to Buzzfeed talking.

Currently, Halsey is touring her Grammy-nominated album, If I Can’t Have Love, I Want Power.

“I just want to release music”, says the artist.
