Prince Harry and American actress Meghan Markle announced to the world that they plan to wed next spring. The couple appeared together in public Monday afternoon at Kensington Palace a short while after making the announcement. The congratulations to the couple have been plentiful.

The couple held hands while Harry spoke to onlookers. The prince said he was ‘thrilled’ but declined to comment on specifics of the couple’s engagement other than saying ‘it was romantic.’ Markle showed her wedding ring to the crowd and expressed her happiness about the engagement.

Clarence House made the official announcement about the Prince’s engagement on behalf Harry’s father, Prince Charles who also expressed that he was thrilled with the couple’s plans to marry.

Justin Welby, the archbishop of Canterbury, is the most likely candidate to conduct the wedding ceremony. Welby also expressed pleasure at the announcement and spoke of how fond he is of Prince Harry as a person.

The wedding announcement is likely to exacerbate already strained relations between Prince Harry and the media. The 33-year-old prince has been vocal in expressing his displeasure with Markle’s past portrayal in the press.

Prince Henry spoke ill of media sources who he felt had produced reports that the Prince considered being both racist and sexist. The 36-year-old Markle is bi-racial. One headline that drew particular ire from the Prince characterized Markle as being ‘Straight Outta Compton.’

There was also a report by a media outlet that published still shots of Markle appearing on the adult website Pornhub. The truth was that someone had uploaded images of Markle appearing on the television show Suits. No pornography was involved.

Markle, who is the product of a union between her Caucasian dad, and an African-American mom has expressed pride in her heritage and label herself a ‘proud mixed-race woman.’

Markle has been dedicated to humanitarian efforts. She has worked as an ambassador in Rwanda and a women’s advocate for the United Nations.
