An animated series based on the concept art from an unmade version of “Dune” has been announced. The animated series has divided opinion because of the lack of copyright ownership a cryptocurrency company has over the story. Alejandro Jodorowsky’s unmade version of Frank Herbert’s “Dune” is one of the mythical movies in history. The movie would have starred Orson Welles, Gloria Swanson., and Mick Jagger. The Jodorowsky version of “Dune” is thought to have been the basis for much of Hollywood’s science fiction output from the 1970s onwards.

The Spice DAO group purchased the original artwork book created by Jodorowsky when he tried to finance his version of Herbert’s science fiction classic. The purchase for more than $2.5 million made headlines because it was ten times the estimated price. Spice DAO had raised concern because of fears the cryptocurrency backers would sell the images as non-fungible tokens. NFTs provide ownership rights of an image on the internet to the buyer. Some have claimed the original book would be burned in a publicity stunt by Spice DAO.

The mood around the purchase of the artwork by Spice DAO has changed significantly over the last few days. The group announced they had put a limited animated series into production based on the artwork in Jodorowsky’s book. The founder of Spice DAO, Soban Saquib, took to social media to explain the changing mood around Spice DAO. Instead of breaking up the artwork book for NFTs, the group looks set to try and adapt the book into an animated series.

The decision of Spice DAO to adapt the book confused social media users who questioned the copyright of the artwork. Many pointed out the purchase of the copyright of a book did not give the owner any right to copyright claims. The intellectual property rights to Herbert’s book are not set to reach the public domain until 2056. Spice DAO has begun the consultation process with film producers and entertainment law specialists to explore the possibility of producing a limited series. The controversy over producing an animated series Spice DAO does not own the rights to has added to concern the book will eventually be broken up and sold as NFTs.
