Andor, Disney+’s latest Star Wars series, released its first season finale last week. While not answering many of the series’ lingering questions, it nonetheless featured a big action scene and the first stirrings of rebellion against the Empire in a galaxy, far, far, away. The first season also served as an in-depth character study into series lead Cassian Andor, who is played by Diego Luna. Although Andor was introduced as a committed rebel and seasoned spy in 2016’s Rogue One, the Disney+ series saw the character as more of a mercenary interested in his own personal mission of finding his long-lost sister. Luna recently spoke with reporters with Collider about the character’s journey this season and what fans can expect from the upcoming second season.

In looking at Andor’s changes over the last season, Luna says that two events have transformed the character’s perspective going forward. On the one hand, Luna says that Andor’s experience in an Imperial jail has shown him how depraved the Empire has become over its 15-year rule of the galaxy. On the other hand, Luna also feels that the speech given by Maarva, Andor’s adoptive mother, in episode 12 served as the final lynchpin in his decision to join the burgeoning Rebellion Alliance. Looking back at filming the scene, Luna confessed to having tears in his eyes when the character spoke, noting how well the episode was written by showrunner Tony Gilroy. In Luna’s view, Maarva’s speech served both as a wake-up call for Andor and a source of strength for him going forward.

While not revealing much about season two, Luna nevertheless says that Andor’s search for his sister will still be a big part of the character’s journey. Looking more closely at the character, Luna also says that Andor’s familial bonds will always play a big part in his motives. Thus far, writers with the show have also confirmed that Andor season two will see time jumps throughout season and feature the rebel base on Yavin IV as a major location.

Andor season two does not currently have a release date but is expected to land on Disney+ in 2024.
