Netflix’s Fear Street trilogy may soon be the first of many.
The R-rated horror films, released in the summer of 2021 and based on author R.L. Stine’s beloved teen scream classics, earned acclaim from viewers and critics alike, with Rotten Tomatoes scores of 84% for Part One, 88% for Part Two, and 90% for Part Three as of July 2022. With both horror and star Sadie Sink currently ruling Netflix’ Top 10 rankings thanks to the release of Stranger Things season 4, it comes as no surprise that Fear Street is being revisited.
While discussing the 30th anniversary of the Goosebumps series with Yahoo! Entertainment, the prolific author let it slip that more Fear Street movies are in the pipeline. Horror website Bloody Disgusting has confirmed that as of July 2022, Netflix is “very deep into development” on more Fear Street.
It remains to be seen whether original director Leigh Janiak (2014’s Honeymoon) will be involved, though she has previously stated that Fear Street has the potential to be a “horror Marvel”.
Also unknown are whether any additional Fear Street movies will follow the release model of the original trilogy, where one film was released each week for three weeks. Netflix is known for dropping entire seasons at once, though the aforementioned Stranger Things season 4 was split into two parts.
Additionally, it remains to be seen whether any new Fear Street movies will be original stories inspired by the lore as the first trilogy was, or will dip into the 33 year long, 50+ book canon of the series.
With Disney+ working on a revival of the Goosebumps television series and Fear Street back in Netflix’s eye, it seems clear that R.L. Stine is set to influence an all-new generation of horror hounds.
