The Office executive producer Greg Daniels has announced the show will officially end after its ninth season.

Speaking at a morning press conference, Daniels said: “This year feels like the last chance to… make an artistic ending for the show. This will be the last season of ‘The Office,’ and we’re planning a big exciting last season.”

The announcement isn’t a total surprise, however. Speculation of when the show would officially end has been ongoing since the show’s flagship star Steve Carrell left his role at the end of the seventh season, with several other cast members including Mindy Kaling following suit.

Paul Lieberstein, who played the character of Toby on the show, also left to work on the show’s upcoming spin-off The Farm, which is based on the character of Dwight Schrute (played by Rainn Wilson). Previously, execs had stated that the two shows could work together as a pair, but now it seems those plans are out the window.

British Comedienne Catherine Tate will reprise her role as Nellie Bertram in the final, alongside new stars Jake Lacy, Clark Duke, and a number of surprise guest stars due to appear for the show’s final season.

I was also recently revealed that ‘Breaking Bad’ star Bryan Cranston will direct one of the episodes in the final season.

The final season of the The Office will kick off Thursday, September 20 at 9 pm on NBC.
