Season three of Stargirl recently debuted on The CW with an intriguing murder mystery. The season’s premiere episode saw the murder of Steven Sharpe/The Gambler, a former member of the Injustice Society who had turned over a new leaf after learning that he had a daughter. Thus far, multiple characters have been suspected in the heinous deed, including Sharpe’s fellow Injustice Society allies and Shiv, a newly christened member of the Justice Society of America. Despite rave reviews for the show’s new direction, Stargirl’s fate is still very much up in the air following The CW’s sale to NexStar Broadcasting. In talking about the show’s future, series lead Brec Bassinger says that fans can rest assured of a proper ending even if the series is canceled after its current season.

Speaking with reporters from Looper, Bassinger says that series showrunner Geoff Johns has written a satisfying conclusion to the show’s current season if The CW does not bring back the show for a fourth season. While hopeful for a renewal, Bassinger says that this season’s finale will please fans even if it ends up being the show’s last episode. Bassinger adds that she and the rest of the cast are very lucky to have Johns leading their team, pointing out his love for the character and knowledge of the source material. Johns himself created the character of Stargirl/Courtney Whitmore as a way of honoring his sister Courtney, who died in the TWA Flight 800 tragedy in 1996. In a separate interview with Starburst Magazine, Barbara Whitmore actress Amy Smart says that she and the rest of the cast have been told that the network will make a renewal decision by the end of September.

Should Stargirl get renewed for additional episodes, Bassinger hopes for crossovers with other DC characters. Specifically, Bassinger is hopeful for a crossover with the Superman universe. The actress feels that fellow CW series Superman and Lois is similar in tone to Stargirl and that it would be fun to team up with Tyler Hoechlin’s Man of Steel. Bassinger also says that she would love to share the screen with Melissa Benoist’s Supergirl.

Stargirl airs Wednesdays on The CW.
