Laura Prepon has been cast in ‘Orange is the New Black,’ an original Netflix drama.

Prepon joins ‘American Pie’ actor Jason Biggs and rising star Taylor Schilling on the big-house drama.

The series, from ‘Weeds’ creator Jenji Kohan, is based on the memoir by Piper Kerman about her year spent in a women’s penitentiary.

Schilling will play Piper, a woman who finds herself in prison because she dated a drug-runner ten years ago. Biggs co-stars as Piper’s fiancée. Prepon will play the ex-drug-running former girlfriend of Piper.

Prepon, best known for her role in ‘That ’70s Show,’ recently appeared with Chelsea Handler on the short-lived NBC comedy, ‘Are You There, Chelsea.’

‘Orange is the New Black’ is part of Netflix’s continued efforts to delve into programs with original content.

Netflix made its initial foray into original content with last year’s mobster comedy ‘Lilyhammer.’ They also plan on airing new episodes of cult comedy favorite ‘Arrested Development.’

‘House of Cards,’ a political drama with Kevin Spacey, David Fincher and Robin Wright is also in the works for Netflix.

With big names and intriguing stories, it seems like the new direction Netflix is heading could certainly be a success.
