Despite earning a respectable 2.1 million viewers during its premiere, HBO’s new series The Newsroom will take a different direction in season two.

According to reports, show creator Aaron Sorkin will replace most if not all of the active writing staff of the show. The only active writer staying on board is said to be Sorkin’s ex-girlfriend Corinne Kinsbury.

According to a statement from HBO, however, the move is, “nothing out of the ordinary.” The network say moves like this happen behind the scenes more often than fans tend to see.

However, the news is gaining attention largely as a result of the show’s direct criticisms. Despite its relative success, The Newsroom has been marred by critics for its inaccuracies and problems with authenticity. Sorkin recently defended the show’s criticisms, which may or may not have something to do with the recently announced staff firings.

Speaking to NPR’s Terry Gross, Sorkin said: “The critics and the audience who are reacting as hostilely to the show… Are showing off an intellect and an erudition that I don’t have. The full interview is available from NPR’s Fresh Air.
