Meet Tanya Lacey.

You’ve probably never heard of her before. That’s OK, we hadn’t before this morning either.

Even though you’ve likely never heard of her, you will certainly know of her work. The singer/songwriter co-wrote will.i.am‘s hit single “T.H.E (The Hardest Ever)” Ft. Jennifer Lopez and Mick Jagger.

Lacey is a rising star on the UK Soul / R&B scene who got got her start after signing to Sony Music in 2010. She has since collaborated with and written songs for a range of popular UK artists; and supported Bruno Mars on his UK tour. However, in an unfortunate turn of events, not long after the release of her debut single “Letter to My Ex / Born to Fly”, Lacey was forced to part ways with Sony while her debut album was in the works due to an internal re-shuffle at the label.

Not to be deterred, Lacey decided to add businesswoman to her list of talents, and take on the task of self-publishing her own music. A 7-track EP titled ‘Head Chef’ will be her first full release, drawing a range of genres from Soul and Hip Hop to Reggae and R&B.

Still need a reason to pay attention? – Lacey invited our friends at Soul Culture to watch her perform one of her favorite tracks in the studio; Mary J. Blige‘s “No More Drama”, for their Inspired By series.

“This session was inspired by one of my favorite singers,” Lacey said of her song choice for the studio session. “She’s an absolute legend and i love her honesty and passion in her vocals. I wanted to do a song that I’ve always loved and when i heard her sing it live it just blew me away, so that’s why I chose this song today.”

Her rendition of this iconic R&B tune is magnificent and certainly worth a listen, and she’s certainly one to watch in the future.
