The MTV Europe Music Awards are one of the biggest celebrations of music in the world, aiming to recognize the best of musical talent around the globe from a European perspective. Some of the biggest names in music were -supposedly- on the edge of their seats last night at the Ziggo Dome in Amsterdam, Netherlands for the 2013 edition of the event, which is now in its 20th year. It was a star-studded year, with the likes of One Direction, Eminem, Miley Cyrus, and Justin Bieber all nominated for awards.
Both Justin Timberlake and Macklemore & Ryan Lewis were hot favorites to walk away with multiple awards after leading the nominations with four nods each. However, Macklemore walked away with just one award and JT left empty-handed. Hey, at least you had fun, right…
Eminem won in the ‘Best Hip-Hop’ category, as well as walking away with the ‘Global Icon Award’ – Wins that come hot on the heels of his triumph at the YouTube Music Awards, where he won the ‘Artist of the Year’ award.
One Direction took the ‘Best UK & Ireland Act’ and ‘Best Pop’ awards home, while Harry Styles walked with the ‘Best Look’ award. Bruno Mars also channeled his inner Michael Jackson for his performance at the event, where he won the ‘Best Song’ award for “Locked Out Of Heaven.”
MTV’s artist to watch Austin Mahone also deserves a special mention, walking away with two EMAs – ‘Artist on the Rise’ and ‘Best Push.’
The MTV EMAs aired live on MTV stations around the world, with Redfoo of LMFAO fame hosting the event, with some help from Ariana Grande, who led the backstage presentations. Next year’s EMAs will take place in Glasgow, Scotland.
