Nirvana have announced they will be re-release seminal Grunge single ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ in the U.K. later this month.

The ‘Nirvana for Christmas No.1‘ Facebook campaign is aiming to break the trend of X-Factor winners getting the Christmas No.1 every year by encouraging its 100,000+ strong member base to buy ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ in an attempt to counter the X-Factor winner’s rise to the top of the charts.

To boost the group’s chances of success, Nirvana are re-releasing the 1991 single as a limited edition 7″ record to help boost the group’s chances.

A band representative wrote on Facebook: “We’ve heard about the campaign to get ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ by Nirvana for Christmas Number One in the UK (supporting the children’s charity Rhythmix) and it looks like the label will re-release the single 7″ as a limited edition for the fans!”

A similar campaign attempted to get Rage Against the Machine’s ‘Killing in the Name of’ the Christmas #1 in 2009.

Nirvana’s iconic ‘Nevermind’ album was recently re-mastered and re-released for the album’s 20th anniversary.
