Monkees frontman Davy Jones has died suddenly, aged 66.

Jones suffered a heart attack on Wednesday morning and was pronounced dead at Martins Hospital South, Southern Florida.

Jones’ brother-in-law and manger, Joseph Pacheco released a statement on the families behalf: “All of his family, friends and fans mourn Davy’s loss. We were fortunate to have such an incredible human being in our lives. Sadly, his time on Earth was cut far too short and he will be missed tremendously by all who knew him.”

Born in Manchester, England Jones had his first taste of fame as the Artful Dodger in a London West End production of Oliver. When the show moved to Broadway, Jones received a Tony award nomination garnering attention from music producers.

However it was as English heartthrob of The Monkees that Davy really found fame.

The Monkees were initially formed by music producer Don Kirshner for an NBC comedy series inspired by Beatles mania. Jones preformed alongside drummer Micky Dolenz, guitarist Michael Nesmith and bassist Peter Tawk.

Despite the television series ending in 1968 The Monkees produced nine albums between 1966 and 1970, including hits ‘Hey Hey, we’re the Monkees’ and ‘Daydream Believer’. The band reunited last summer to celebrate their 45th anniversary.

Micky Dolenz shared his condolences on Twitter, “I am in a state of shock and disbelief right now…my heart and prayers go out to Davy’s family.”

Davy is survived by his wife Jessica Pacheco and four daughters from previous marriages.
