“Hello Miss Mafioso” – Lady Gaga opened the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) with a performance of her latest single ‘You and I’ as her male alter ego Jo Calderone.

Before the performance, Calderone delivered a monologue to the crowd, swearing and criticizing Gaga for “leaving him”.

“She gets out of the bed, puts on the heels, she goes into the bathroom, I hear the water go on, she comes out of the bathroom dripping wet, and she’s still got the heels on. And what’s with the hair? At first it was sexy but now I’m just confused,” Calderone said.

During the performance Gaga, dressed in the standard Calderone uniform of white t-shirt with black trousers and a jacket, was joined by Queen guitarist Brian May for a high energy version of the solo he recorded for the singer’s ‘Born This Way’ album

It was announced last week that Gaga will be ‘stripping down’ for her performance for the VMAs, but few would have anticipated that she was stripping away her gender to become a man for the award ceremony.

True to the ‘stripping down’ promos released early last week, the song was lighter than the original rendition, delivered from behind a piano.

Much to the confusion of the crowd, Gaga kept up the Jo Calderone alter ego throughout throughout the award ceremony, and almost kissed a highly confused Britney Spears while presenting her with an award.
