The popular music festival Lollapalooza returns in 2022 to Chicago with dates set for the last weekend of July. On the bill headlined by Metallica is Goldman Sachs CEO David Solomon, who owns a record label that donates to charities. Solomon will perform as a DJ.

Lollapalooza 2022 Acts

Other acts scheduled to appear at Grant Park in Chicago July 28-31 include Dua Lipa, J. Cole, Green Day, Doja Cat, Machine Gun Kelly, Lil Baby and Kygo. The event’s founding rock band, Jane’s Addiction, is billed as special guest. Additionally, dozens of rising acts will appear over the 4-day festival. Ticket prices range from $350 to $4,200.

Double Life of a DJ/Banker

Solomon, who became Chairman/CEO of financial giant Goldman Sachs in 2018, earns millions annually as a banker while he DJs mainly as a hobby. He announced his appearance at the high-profile festival on social media. Last year’s festival attracted 400,000 music fans.

He launched his label Payback Records in 2018 as a joint venture with Big Beat/Atlantic Records. All proceeds go to charities that deal with issues such as drug addiction and hunger relief. His music streaming profile as a DJ/music producer has over a half million followers.

The road to Solomon gaining a slot on the Lollapalooza show was paved with some hits on the dance charts under the name DJ D-Sol. His first chart appearance was an electronic dance cover of “Don’t Stop” by Fleetwood Mac in 2018. Since then he’s had three major hits on the dance charts, although he has yet to penetrate the pop charts.

Why Solomon Likes to DJ

In a 2019 televised interview Solomon said DJing gives him a chance to get away from his main career and have fun with something more creative. He’s near 60 years old but has stated younger people at Goldman Sachs are interested in his DJ work. He occasionally DJs at clubs in New York and Miami. DJing, Solomon has asserted, gives him energy.

Concert History

At a Southampton, New York charity event in 2020, Solomon opened a show for the electronic act The Chainsmokers, which led to controversial press coverage. New York health authorities investigated the event for widespread social distancing violations.

Lollapalooza has been a long-running festival that began in Chicago in 1991. In the nineties, the event toured multiple cities but since 2005 it’s mainly been a Chicago festival. It’s still considered one of the largest annual music concerts in America.
