According to Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins, shooting for the sequel is set to begin “shockingly soon.”

These comments came on the red carpet of the Cannes Film Festival, when asked by a reporter from Variety about the film. “There’s nothing I can say—very soon. Shockingly soon!” she teased, before rushing off.

This fits with rumors that the movie is set to begin filming sometime this summer, ahead of its planned November 1, 2019 release date. Specifically, last October had reports say that the movie was going to begin shooting in June, and Jenkins’ comment implies that that schedule is still more-or-less on track.

To keep on that schedule, however, the sequel will have to rush a bit compared to the first movie. Wonder Woman filmed from November of 2015 until the following May, ahead of a June 2, 2017 release date. This year-long gap between filming and the box office gave it time for additional photography (i.e., reshoots) in November 2016. That all amounts to about two and a half years, while the sequel will only have about one and a half.

It all paid off in the end. So far, Wonder Woman has been the one unqualified success of the DC Extended Universe; its other entries have all gotten divisive reviews at best, and several made less money than Warner Bros. wanted. Some of the major criticisms have been that the movies are too dour and deconstructive, a problem averted by Jenkins’ film, which, despite being set in World War I, had a serious yet hopeful tone.

Given its success (making $821.9 million on a $149 million budget), Warner Bros. understandably decided to fast-track the sequel. This will be the first DCEU movie to get a direct sequel.

Not much is known about the plot as of yet, but the movie will be set during the 1980s, and the Cheetah, a prominent Wonder Woman antagonist from the comic, will be played by Kristen Wiig. Gal Gadot will be reprising her part as Wonder Woman, of course, and surprisingly Chris Pine will be returning as well, though it is unknown in what capacity. Pedro Pascal has also been cast in an unspecified role.

There is still a long time until the movie comes out, of course, but if filming does begin, fans can expect more news shortly.
