The long-awaited first theatrical trailer for the Paul Thomas Anderson directed art piece ‘The Master’ has just been revealed online.

The full-length trailer follows a series of short teasers posted to YouTube with little fanfare; which were the film’s primary promotional methods up until now. Given the subject-matter of the movie, it wouldn’t be inappropriate to say these ‘underground’ promotional tactics have amassed a true cult following for the film.

Starring Joaquin Phoenix (Gladiator, Walk The Line),  Philip Seymour Hoffman (The Big Lebowski, Mission: Impossible III),  and Amy Adams (Junebug, Doubt), the film follows the story of a “charismatic young man who returns home to America from World War II and forms a faith-based organization. He is now known as “the Master” and his belief system is catching on. As the group is gaining momentum and adding new converts, a young drifter arrives and becomes the Master’s invaluable aid.”

The cinematography, led by Mihai Malaimare Jr., looks set to be a standout feature of the film; particularly with the use of 65mm film, to provide an incredibly wide and detailed image – Think Lawrence of Arabia. The popularity of IMAX has been increasing recently, particularly following Brad Bird’s Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol and Christopher Nolan use of the format in the latest Batman saga. IMAX also uses 65mm film, however it is much ‘taller’ than traditional 65mm, so it’s refreshing to see Anderson moving to the traditional large formats for the film.

‘The Master’ is expected to be released Fall 2012.
