The DC Comics Extended Universe adaptation of the “Flashpoint” story arc moves forward according to Ezra Miller. Miller, of course, played the cinematic version of The Flash in the Justice League film. Concerns had arisen about whether both The Flash and Cyborg solo film projects would be canceled. Justice League’s poor performance at the box office didn’t exactly contribute much hope for future DC Comics’ spinoff hero projects.

Miller, however, has noted that Flashpoint is slated for filming. He even said filming commences “pretty soon.” All of this is good news for serious fans of DC Comics. Flashpoint was one of the best Flash comic book plotlines in recent years. In Flashpoint, The Flash travels back in time to keep his mother from being killed. In doing so, he completely changes history in a multitude of ways.

One of the more shocking developments affects Batman. In the Flash’s new alternate reality, Bruce Wayne dies while his father, Thomas Wayne, lives. Thomas Wayne ends up donning the cape and cowl to become a much more violent version of Batman. Jeffrey Dean Morgan is currently lobbying for the Thomas Wayne/Batman role. Morgan plays Negan on The Walking Dead and previously played the brutal vigilante The Comedian in the Watchmen movie. He also debuted in the Thomas Wayne role in Batman v. Superman.

And Bruce Wayne’s mother becomes The Joker. Yes, Flashpoint really creates a wild new timeline. The Flash discovers tampering with timelines may come with severe consequences.

Hopefully, the creative teams at DC Entertainment and Warner Bros. won’t deliver a critical failure along the lines of Batman v. Superman and Justice League. The Flash movie has the potential to be a audience and critical hit along the lines of Wonder Woman. Flashpoint does give the writers, director, and main actors a lot of fantastic material to work with.

Still, concerns exist that the DCEU may be rebooted. Solo projects outside of Wonder Woman would be scrapped or recast. The Flash movie has something working in its favor. The project might not suffer from audience indifference thanks to the hero’s television show counterpart. The television program has created a fan following for the “speedster” hero. The program can also be used to hype the upcoming Flashpoint movie.

With the right interconnected marketing approach, the television series could help remove some of the negativity associated with the faltering DCEU. The Flash movie could find itself far better positioned than other DCEU solo projects.
