After earning critical acclaim at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, Harvey Weinstein proudly proclaimed that ‘The Sapphires’ was this year’s ‘The Artist.’

A distinction like that isn’t a slight, considering Weinstein is arguably the most powerful man in the film industry. If that distinction remains true through Oscar season, Irish actor Chris O’Dowd could be a name floating around the Best Supporting Actor category.

Fans may recognize O’Dowd from his role in last year’s comedy hit ‘Bridesmaids.’ O’Dowd played an Irish-American cop who became Kristin Wiig’s character’s love interest in the film. In ‘The Sapphires,’ a period piece set in Australia during the Vietnam War, O’Dowd plays the unlikely alcoholic manager of an Aborigine group of singers looking to find fame as soul singers.

Following the Cannes screening earlier this summer , the film has already received a limited theatrical release in France and Australia, with New Zealand, Ireland, U.K. and German releases due in the coming months.

The film will also be screened at the Toronto International Film Festival, and this weekend’s Telluride Film Festival in Telluride, Colorado.
