In anticipation of its upcoming release, Lionsgate have revealed an unseen clip for The Hunger Games.

The movie, directed by Gary Ross, is an adaptation of the hugely popular novel by Suzanne Collins. The first in a trilogy, The Hunger Games (2008) is proceeded by Catching Fire (2009) and Mockingjay (2010).

Set in a post-apocalyptic United States, the movie follows sixteen-year-old protagonist Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) as she risks her life and competes in The Hunger Games. The annual event sees two teenagers, one boy and one girl, reluctantly engage in battle and fight to the death.

In the clip Katniss shows off her exemplary archery skills. However, when the Gamemakers show more interest in their meal Katniss takes a perfect shot towards an apple in the mouth of a slaughtered pig – the centrepiece of the Gamemakers buffet.

Susanne Collins has recently voiced her support for the movie: “I’m really happy with how it turned out. I feel like the book and the film are individual yet complementary pieces that enhance one another.”

“The film opens up a world beyond Katniss’s point of view, allowing the audience to assess the happenings of places like the Hunger Games control room and President Snow’s rose garden, thereby adding a new dimension to the story.”

Alongside Jennifer Lawrence, The Hunger Games also stars Josh Hutcherson as rival competitor Peeta Mellark.

The Hunger Games hits theatres in both the US and UK on March 23.
