Disney-Marvel’s film Thor: Ragnarok continues to reign supreme in the US box office. Estimates show that this third movie in the Thor trilogy will bring in $61.3 million in the USA in its second week of showings.

Thor: Ragnarok had one of the most impressive openings in the 2017 box office season, raking in $127.7 million on the opening weekend alone. Officially, Thor: Ragnarok has the fourth highest launch of the 2017 season.

Thor’s showing this week was even more impressive compared with the second place movie, Fox’s Murder on the Orient Express. Kenneth Branagh’s adaptation of Murder opened this weekend with only $28.1 million in US ticket sales. The comedy Daddy’s Home 2 came in third place with $27.3 million.

For the uninitiated, Thor is a Marvel super hero based loosely on ancient Norse mythology. Chris Hemsworth plays the role of Thor both in the Thor trilogy as well as various Avengers films. A few other big name stars in Thor: Ragnarok include Jeff Goldblum, Cate Blanchett, Mark Ruffalo, and Anthony Hopkins.

Not only is Thor: Ragnarok killing it at the box office, it’s also one of the best-reviewed blockbusters of 2017. As of today, Thor: Ragnarok has an impressive Rotten Tomatoes score of 93 percent.

Although Murder on the Orient Express had just as much star power as Thor, it didn’t fare as well with the critics. The Rotten Tomatoes aggregate score for this latest adaptation of Agatha Christie’s murder mystery is only 58 percent. A few other stars with Kenneth Branagh in Murder include Daisy Ridley, Johnny Depp, and Penelope Cruz.

Rounding out the top five films for this week, Bad Moms Christmas and Jigsaw came in fourth and fifth places. These films earned $11.8 million and $3.5 million respectively.

The highest grossing film of 2017 thus far is Disney’s live-action adaptation of Beauty in the Beast. When it was in theatres earlier this year, Beauty and the Beast brought in an impressive $504 million. Second place goes to Wonder Women with $412 million and third goes to Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 with $389 million.

Most film experts, however, expect Disney’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi to be the number one highest grossing film of 2017 when it’s released on December 14th. The Last Jedi is the sequel to 2015’s incredibly successful Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
