The past year was a successful one when it came to people heading out to the theaters to see blockbuster movies. In fact, a number of records were set for 2018, thanks to big-budget superhero films, dinosaurs, and animated films.

According to a report from Variety on December 28, the total revenue for North America is expected to go past $11.9 billion for the first time ever. Leading the way were two Marvel superhero films, which brought out viewers in large quantities. Marvel’s “Black Panther” grossed $700,059,566 in its run this past year.

Right behind it was “Avengers: Infinity War,” which features the Black Panther character along with an ensemble cast of superheroes and actors. It took in a total gross of $678,815,482 during a nearly five-month run, according to Box Office Mojo stats. Meanwhile, “Incredibles 2,” which brought in a gross of $608,581,744, took the third spot for top grossing films of 2018.

Rounding out the top five were “Jurassic: Fallen World” and “Deadpool 2.” They took in a respectable $416,769,345 and $318,491,426, respectively. Of those films, “Deadpool 2” also had a new version with a number of changes released for the Christmas holiday season called, “Once Upon a Deadpool.”

While “Black Panther” captured the domestic gross win at the box office, it was “Avengers: Infinity War” winning the global fight. However, “Panther” is also among the first Marvel superhero films to receive critical acclaim in terms of a Best Motion Picture nomination at the Golden Globes.

All of the dollar signs mean that Hollywood will have a lot to live up to in 2019. However, it appears the superhero films could once again lead the way. The DC Comics-based “Aquaman” is already capturing plenty of dollars heading to the new year. Marvel will also bring forth brand new films with “Captain Marvel,” the “Avengers Endgame” film, and “Spider-Man: Far From Home.”

It remains to be seen if the superheroes can conquer the box office again, as 2018 was certainly full of plenty of blockbuster action and fun!
