British actor Henry Cavill took to social media earlier this week to confirm his return as Clark Kent/Superman in the DC Universe. Cavill first appeared as Superman in 2013’s Man of Steel and reprised the role twice more in 2016’s Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice and 2017’s Justice League. Since then, the actor has been noncommittal in whether he would ever return to the part. All that changed last month when Cavill returned as Superman for a cameo appearance in a mid-credits scene in the Dwayne Johnson-led Black Adam. While speculation raged on if Cavill was officially back in the franchise or if the Black Adam cameo was just a one-off appearance, the actor confirmed to his followers that he would indeed be playing the Man of Tomorrow in future DCU films.

In an Instagram post, Cavill reiterated that he would be returning for future DC projects, saying that he initially held back on revealing his return to the part so viewers could get a chance to see Black Adam. Cavill also noted that it was the fans of the DC Universe that led him back to the part. The actor was sure to thank fans for their patience and promised that there would be much more to come for Superman and Clark Kent in DC films. Cavill added that his cameo in Black Adam was just a taste of what is in store for the character and, evoking a line from Man of Steel, called it the renewal of the dawn of hope.

Responding to Cavill’s post, Johnson welcomed Cavill back to the DC Universe and said that the series cannot move forward without Superman, the greatest superhero in the franchise. Teasing an eventual battle between Superman and Black Adam, Johnson sneakily told Cavill that he would see him again. While a battle pitting Johnson’s Black Adam against Cavill’s Superman and Zachary Levi’s Shazam, the antihero’s traditional archnemesis, seems like a logical step forward in the DCU, those close to the studio say that a grand battle between the three is still several films away. Instead, DC executives are rumored to be focusing on a proper sequel to Man of Steel which will reintroduce audiences to Superman.
