Despite Sony/Columbia Studios confirming that The Amazing Spider-Man will be made into a trilogy, word around the studio is that director Mark Webb could possibly be out as the sequel’s director.

Webb’s first film, 500 Days Of Summer, was produced by 20th Century Fox. Under his contract with Fox, he still has to create at least one more film for the company. With production for a Spider-Man sequel scheduled to begin early next year – and a release date slated for may 2014 – Webb’s obligations may hold him back.

Webb is also having doubts about whether he would want to return to the franchise. When asked about returning for another Spider-Man film, Webb told HuffPo: “People ask about the sequel and I’m like, ‘Well, you know, I don’t know if I want to do that, but I love the process.’ I love Andrew and Emma. But it’s like asking someone who has just given birth, ‘Do you want to get pregnant again?'”

Screen Rant notes that despite Webb’s role being in question, the cast and crew for the sequel is expected to be relatively set, with stars Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone already due to sign deals to continue their roles as Peter Parker and Gwen Stacy. As of yesterday, The Amazing Spider-Man has been a massive financial success, grossing more than $500 million worldwide at the box office.

Columbia Studio Chief Douglas Belgrad has gone on record saying that he would like Webb to continue his role as director of the series, “but there are obstacles.” Whether or not Webb’s work with Fox holds his role back remains to be seen.
