Deadpool 2 is going to be a monstrous hit. Not too many people in the movie industry assume Deadpool’s return should do anything less than make monster money in ticket sales. The ticket seller known as Fandango, however, can be described as pleasantly surprised. Deadpool 2 appears to be headed to break a previous record for Fandango. Specifically, the sequel is on track to earn the most money for an R-rated feature in terms of ticket presales.

What that means is superhero movie fans are already buying the tickets through Fandango in order to make sure they see the movie on opening weekend. The scenario of Deadpool 2 selling out across the nation for every showing isn’t likely, but Friday and Saturday evening showings should be jammed. The same will be true for Sunday afternoons. Overall, the sequel to the original “merc with the mouth” film is slated to deliver tremendous box office for Fox.

The original Deadpool was a total sleeper hit. Audiences loved the original film meaning the sequel could do even better than the first one.

How much of the success of the new film will derive from the popularity of Deadpool versus the overall superhero movie enthusiasm Black Panther and Avengers: Infinity War seem to be generating? No real answer to that question exists since there’s no way of measuring an answer. In truth, the answer wouldn’t matter anyway. Fox and Marvel don’t really worry about what motivates ticket buying. The studios are just happy people buy tickets.

That said, each individual superhero movie must stand on its own merits. The superhero movie craze cannot save a bad film with no buzz.

Granted, Deadpool 2 certainly benefits from back-to-back audience-pleasing comic book movies. If audiences feel they get their money’s worth from superhero movies, they’ll show enthusiasm and buy tickets. Consider it doubtful that Fox chose to go forward with a poor script for the Deadpool sequel. The odds are audiences will just be just as thrilled with the new film as they were with the original.

If the superhero movie craze is going to die down, the decline won’t start with Deadpool 2. Fandango’s pre-sales figures are proof of this assessment.
