Peter Jackson‘s ‘The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey’ has been unleashed on the silver screen.

The film marks the first of a trilogy of films adapting the incredibly popular literary masterpiece The Hobbit, by J.R.R. Tolkien.

Set 60-years before ‘The Lord of the Rings,’ which was also directed by Jackson, the three films will be continuous, telling the story of Bilbo Baggins, who is swept into an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor from the fearsome Dragon Smaug in Middle Earth.

‘The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey’ sees Baggins approached out of the blue by the Wizard Gandalf the Grey. He soon finds himself in the company of 13 Dwarves led by the legendary warrior, Thorin Oakenshield. Their journey will take them into the Wild, through treacherous lands swarming with Goblins, Orcs and deadly Wargs, as well as a mysterious and sinister figure known only as the Necromancer.

The story leaves off ready for the second installment. Originally titled ‘There and Back Again,’ a last minute name change saw the next installment renamed to ‘The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug,’ in reference to the dragon Smaug and its destruction of Lake Town.

‘The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug’ is due for release on December 13, 2013. The third installment of the trilogy, which adopts the abandoned title originally slated for the second film ‘There and Back Again,’ is scheduled for release July 14, 2014.
