On Tuesday (Jan. 22), the 2019 Oscar nominations were announced via a live telecast. As with most years, there were surprises in terms of nominees and discussion of snubs. However, once the dust settled it was clear that two movies are leading the way. “The Favourite” and “Roma” had 10 nominations apiece, more than any other movies on the list of nominees.

According to Variety’s report, “Roma” and “The Favourite” were each among the Best Picture nominees. There were a total of eight movies in the category. Others included “Black Panther,” “BlacKkKlansman,” “Bohemian Rhapsody,” “A Star Is Born,” “Vice,” and “Green Room.” Of those films, “Green Book” and “Bohemian Rhapsody” won in the two unique Best Picture categories at the Golden Globes.

“Roma” and “The Favourite” each have nominees in the lead actress category as well. Actress Yalitza Aparicio is nominated for her work in “Roma,” while Olivia Colman is a nominee in the category for “The Favourite.” The two films also boast three of the five nominees in the supporting actress category with Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz of “The Favourite” against “Roma” actress Marina de Tavira.

“A Star Is Born” saw nominations for both of its lead actors. Bradley Cooper is in for the lead actor category against Christian Bale (“Vice”), Willem Dafoe (“At Eternity’s Gate”), Rami Malek (“Bohemian Rhapsody”), and Viggo Mortensen (“Green Book”). Singer Lady Gaga goes up against Aparicio (“Roma”), Glenn Close (“The Wife”), Colman (“The Favourite”), and Melissa McCarthy (“Can You Ever Forgive Me?”)

Interestingly enough, Cooper was not nominated in the Best Director category for “A Star Is Born.” Nominees include a first-time nomination for Spike Lee for “BlacKkKlansman,” as well as Yorgos Lanthimos for “The Favourite” and Alfonso Cuaron for “Roma.” Also nominated are Pawel Pawlikowski for “Cold War” and Adam McKay for “Vice.”

Other noteworthy tidbits from the recent Oscar nominations included Glenn Close getting her seventh nomination for an Academy Award, as well as “Black Panther” becoming the first superhero film with a nomination. “Roma” is also the first Best Picture nomination for streaming media company Netflix. In addition, the film’s lead actress Yalitza Aparicio is the first indigenous woman nominated in the Best Actress category.

The 91st annual Academy Awards show will take place on Sunday, February 24, 2019, from Dolby Theater in Los Angeles, California. ABC will televise the event starting at 5 p.m. Pacific Time (8 p.m. Eastern Time).
