The 2019 Emmy nominations were revealed in Hollywood on Tuesday and the results featured some surprises for industry pros and fans alike. Game of Thrones held the most nominations, not a giant leap considering the popular series finished up its multi-season run. While not exactly praised as the best season among critics and fans, the loyalty to the show made up for any shortcomings.

The fantasy series wasn’t the only long running nominee to return. AMC’s popular spin-off to Breaking Bad, better Call Saul, also made a return visit. Star Bob Odenkirk doubled up on the recognition with a nomination as best actor. Set in the world before Walter White was everyone’s favorite meth dealer, this look at how Breaking Bad’s legal eagle became a legend has been a solid contender since its premiere.

On the comedy side of things, HBO also scored success with nominations for Barry. The Bill Hader led series has become a surprise hit that features both comedy and drama in its own unique blend. Hader himself took home nomination as the lead character straddling theater training and a former life of crime.

Schitt’s Creek must go down as the real surprise among nominees. The series, which starts SCTV veterans Eugene Levy and Catherine O’Hara has been quietly gaining a following among critics as well as viewers. The series also got nominations in pivotal categories such as acting.

The only traditional network contribution to the Comedy Series category was The Good Place. Starring Kristen Bell and Ted Danson, it’s refreshing take on comedy sets itself apart from other recent contributions on network TV. The show’s nod may also be an acknowledgement that traditional network TV is still around in some form. In another acting surprise, the series’ actors failed to receive any nominations for lead or supporting roles.
