With Star Wars: Rebels now behind us, Disney has announced its next animated series set in a galaxy far, far away: Star Wars: Resistance, which will bridge the gap between the original trilogy and the beginning of the ongoing sequels.

This is the third cartoon to exist within the official, Disney-approved version of Star Wars canon, following up from Star Wars: The Clone Wars (2008 through 2014) and Star Wars: Rebels (2014 through 2018). The latter just wrapped up in March, and focused on the early days of the Rebel Alliance and how they formed to combat the Galactic Empire.

As reported by Screen Rant, this new series sounds conceptually similar, and will also be developed by Dave Filoni, who worked on the others. While the previous series largely focused on a teenage boy named Ezra Bridger (Taylor Gray) training to be a Jedi, the new show will have a new character named Kazuda Xiono, described as “a young pilot recruited to help spy on the First Order.” Beyond that, nothing is known about this character’s species, gender or voice actor.

According to Filoni, his/her status as a pilot sounds like it will be important, though.

“The idea for Star Wars Resistance came out of my interest in World War II aircraft and fighter pilots,” Filoni said, and added “There’s a long history of high-speed racing in Star Wars, and I think we’ve captured that sense of excitement in an anime-inspired style, which is something the entire team has been wanting to do for a long time.”

The initial announcement also says that Oscar Isaac and Gwendoline Christie will be playing Poe Dameron and Captain Phasma, respectively. Also showing up in unknown roles are Christopher Sean, Suzie McGrath, Scott Lawrence, Myrna Velasco, Josh Brener, Donald Faison, Bobby Moynihan, Jim Rash and Rachel Butera.

Of course, many other stars from both the movies and other TV series could potentially show up; indeed, Rebels turned out to be practically a sequel series to Clone Wars, with Filoni choosing to bring back many of the characters whom he created for the previous show. Perhaps Ezra, Sabine or Hera will pop up at some point, along with film characters like Finn, Snoke, Kylo Ren, or General Leia.

The show is expected on Disney XD in fall of this year.
